In Small Star Empires you are one of the four major civilisations inhabiting the galaxy that just achieved interstellar travel, you’re keen to establish your empire’s dominance. As this civilisation leader, you’ll have to colonize planetary systems and explore incredible nebulae.
Small Star Empires is a quick area control game, yes quick!, where you move ships around a modular board game and try to dominate as much regions as possible.
It’s created by a company called Archona Games which was established in 2015 in Macedonia and wishes to produce the first Macedonian original board game (in the galaxy :P).
What’s Small Star Empires?
It’s a 2 to 4 players game where your objective is colonize the galaxy in a modular board game using hexagons to identify each place. As it has 7 different double-sided sectors, the game play changes every time you set up the board game, which helps a lot in fast games like this.
The pieces of the game are all made of wood, but one of the Kickstarter stretch goals is exactly to make it in high quality plastic. Another stretch goal is to make the board and box thicker than normal, which means more durability and a game with higher standards.
As you move through the map, you can choose between setting a colony or a trade station in that specific system. Different from other games in this genre, other players can’t conquest your colony or trade station, which increase the importance of strategy during your game play. And to make things more interesting, a trade station gives you more bonus than a colony as it also takes in consideration enemy colonies around it.
The game ends after all colonies and trade station are placed in the board or none of the player can move their ships around (they’re blocked). Then points are calculated based on the type of systems that players have colonies or trade stations. Whoever has the highest score wins the game.

This Kickstarter project accepts backers from $1.5, but you’ll get your hands in a game box only if you pledge $35 or more. The shipping fee is free worldwide.
The game will be shipped on October 2016. Their money target for the project is $14,000 and they are really close to it, even going until 12th of April.

This is one that we should keep an eye. I like the board game style and was afraid that it would take forever to finish it like, for example, Risk. But this one has different rules that make it fast and enjoyable. 🙂
